Christian Women's Group San Diego | Understanding Anger from a Biblical Perspective

Christian Women's Group San Diego: What Does the Bible Say About Anger?

Is Anger a Sin?

"You shouldn't get angry."

Have you ever heard that before?

Many Christian women quietly carry guilt whenever they experience anger. She assumes, maybe even told, that because she loves Christ, she shouldn't feel upset, hurt, frustrated, or disappointed.

Yet Scripture tells a different story.

Anger itself is not the problem. Even Jesus experienced righteous anger (Matthew 21:12-13) . The question isn't whether we become angry—it's what we choose to do with that anger.

Do we allow anger to lead us toward bitterness, resentment, revenge, or distancing from God? If left unchecked, it can cause pain, damaging our relationships, eventually leaving us empty, sad, and alone.

Or, do we allow God to use it to reveal what needs healing? We let God to teach us how to control the anger, develop self-discipline, and be guided by the Holy Spirit, not of ourselves. What magnificence is to beheld as we begin to let His Grace shine? As we grow in our faith, our wisdom, and as we begin to have harmony in our lives, maybe even capture a life filled with what I call “the capitol P, Peace?”

When Anger Turns Into Something More

Sometimes anger is easy to recognize. Other times it quietly settles into our hearts.

It may become:

  • Bitterness

  • Resentment

  • Unforgiveness

  • Emotional distance

  • Harsh words

  • Withdrawal

  • Anxiety

  • Broken relationships

  • Depression

  • Self-harm

  • Numb

  • the list goes on and on…..

Many women discover they’re not just angry about one event - they're carrying years of hurt.

God doesn't invite us to pretend those hurts never happened. He invites us to bring them to Him (Matthew 11:28-30). Through Him all things are possible (Philippians 4:13).

Learning to Respond to Anger in a Biblical Way

A biblical response to anger doesn't mean ignoring emotions. It doesn't mean pretending everything is okay.

Instead, it means learning to:

  • Understand what anger is revealing.

  • Respond with wisdom instead of reacting impulsively.

  • Speak truth with love.

  • Extend grace without abandoning healthy boundaries.

  • Pursue forgiveness while trusting God with justice.

Together we'll examine Scripture and discuss practical ways to respond with both compassion and truth.
