What Would You Like to Change in Your Life? Finding Your Way Forward
Have you ever found yourself thinking, I just want things to be different?
Maybe you're tired of the same arguments in your relationship. Perhaps anxiety, frustration, or disappointment has been taking up too much space in your life. You might feel stuck in a situation you don't know how to change, or simply know that something isn't working the way you'd like it to.
You may have spent a great deal of time thinking about what went wrong, why things are the way they are, or what you wish had happened differently.
But have you taken a moment to consider a different question?
What would you like to be different?
Sometimes, that question is the beginning of a new direction.
What Would You Like to Change in Your Life?
We all have things we'd like to change. It might be how we respond when we're hurt, how we communicate with someone we love, or how much time we spend worrying about things outside our control.
Perhaps you want to feel more confident in your decisions. Maybe you want to strengthen your marriage, experience greater peace, establish healthier boundaries, or reconnect with the things that give your life meaning.
You don't have to be in crisis to want something better.
And you don't need to have every detail figured out before you begin.
Start by asking yourself:
What is taking up more of my time, energy, or attention than I'd like?
What would I like to experience more of in my life?
If one thing improved, what difference would that make?
What would the people closest to me notice if things began to change?
What is one small step I could take toward the life I want?
Your answers can help you move from simply wishing things were different to identifying what matters most and what you might do next.
Why Do We Sometimes Feel Stuck?
Knowing that you want a change doesn't always mean knowing how to make it happen.
You might find yourself having the same argument repeatedly, reacting in ways you later regret, or struggling with thoughts and feelings that seem difficult to shift.
Sometimes, we focus so much on what's wrong that it becomes hard to recognize what is already working, what strengths we bring to a situation, or what possibilities remain.
This doesn't mean your struggles aren't important. Your experiences deserve to be heard and understood.
But your struggles don't have to be the only place where the conversation begins—or ends.
What if you also explored what you hope for, what has helped you through difficult moments before, and what a meaningful improvement would look like for you?
How Solution-Focused Therapy Helps You Move Forward
At Destination Therapy, my approach is Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). Rather than focusing exclusively on problems, this approach helps you identify your best hopes for therapy, recognize your strengths, and explore practical steps toward your preferred future.
Our conversations may include questions such as:
What are your best hopes for our work together?
What would be different if things were going better?
When have you handled a similar challenge in a way that worked?
What small sign would tell you that you're moving in the right direction?
You don't have to arrive with a clear plan or know exactly what needs to change. Together, we can explore what matters to you and identify possible next steps.
The goal is not to suggest that every problem has an easy answer. It is to help you discover possibilities, build on your resources, and work toward meaningful changes that fit your life.
What Difference Would Therapy Make in What You're Struggling With?
Take a moment and imagine that the concern weighing on you today felt more manageable.
Would you communicate differently with your partner? Feel more confident in your choices? Respond to frustration with greater patience? Spend less time caught up in worry? Feel more connected to the people you love?
Perhaps you would simply feel that you had more choices in how you responded to life's challenges.
What difference would that make for you?
This is an important question because therapy isn't just about talking about what's difficult. It's also about understanding what you want for yourself and exploring how you might move toward it.
I'm Tammy Brooks, LMFT, and I work with adults and couples using a Solution-Focused approach. My goal is to help clients identify what they want to be different, recognize their existing strengths, and work toward realistic, meaningful changes.
For those who want their Christian faith incorporated into counseling, I also offer Christian counseling as a distinct option.
You don't need to wait until everything feels overwhelming to consider therapy. Sometimes, the first step is simply acknowledging that you want something to change.
