It’s Okay to Give Up (And Why It Might Help Your Anxiety)

It might sound strange at first—but sometimes, giving up is exactly what helps you feel better.

If you’ve been feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or mentally exhausted, there’s a good chance you’re trying to do too much at once. Your attention is split, your mind is racing, and no matter how hard you try, it feels like you can’t catch up.

That’s not a motivation problem.
That’s an attention problem.

Why Trying to Do Everything Creates Anxiety

When your brain is juggling multiple priorities at once, it creates internal tension.

You might notice:

  • Racing thoughts

  • Irritability

  • Difficulty focusing

  • Feeling emotionally overwhelmed

  • Constant mental “noise”

The truth is, you cannot fully be present in two places at once. When your attention is divided, your nervous system stays activated—and anxiety increases. You begin doing the splits - one foot there and the other foot over there…Ouch!

The Power of “Giving Up”

Giving up doesn’t mean failure.

It means choosing. It means focusing. It means grounding. Maybe it means something else….

However, the important point here is when you intentionally let go of one thing to focus on what matters most right now, you create space for:

  • Mental clarity

  • Emotional relief

  • Better decision-making

  • A calmer body

And often, something unexpected happens—things start to improve.

What Happens When You Focus on One Thing

When your attention is focused:

  • Your brain slows down

  • Your stress response decreases

  • You feel more grounded and present

  • You regain a sense of control

This is a core principle I use in therapy—helping clients shift from overwhelm to clarity by narrowing their focus. Then what difference they begin to notice that is most pleasing as a result? What else begins to happen? What does that say about their abilities to create change? Learn more about me and my style, and how I can become your California therapist: here

A Simple Practice You Can Try Today

Ask yourself:

👉 “What is the most important thing right now?”

Then give yourself permission to let the rest go—just for now.

Not forever. Just for this moment. Just for the right now - again, it’s okay to give up - it doesn’t mean failure - it creates an opportunity for success.

You may be surprised how quickly your anxiety starts to ease.
